CITES
Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

It is the responsibility of the sender, not the carrier, to certify either: that the animals are not species controlled under CITES, or: if they are, to declare their full common and latin names along with their CITES licence permitting trade in that species.
There are many different categories and requirements for which the uninitiated are likely to require assistance.

CRATING SYSTEMS
Whilst IATA lays down their requirements by air, there are equally stringent requirements for road transport in many countries. Every animal that flies in an aircraft has to be loaded and unloaded by road vehicle, so consideration of local regulations is a must.
There are varying degrees of control over journey times, ventilation, floor area, headroom, pen sizes, optimum temperatures etc.

IATA
International Air Transportation Association.

IATA publish their Live Animals Regulations which is available annually from July, and is effective from October. These define the conditions under which animals may be transported by air, with particular reference to the type of crating system required for the species.

These regulations are mandatory.

INSURANCE
There are special insurance policies available covering many different aspects of animal transport, disease risks etc. First time exporters will do well to discuss with me, the risks and insurance options.

INTERNATIONAL PAYMENTS
Remember that any animal that leaves your premises is a free gift until it has been paid for! Live animals are traditionally paid for in advance, or by Letter of Credit.
First-time shippers would do well to study and understand the options. I can give advice on all of the above, or on any animal in transit.

SOURCES OF BREEDING STOCK
I have shipped most types of animals over the past 40 years, from giraffes to gerbils. If I cannot source a particular animal, I probably know a man who can - in many different countries of the world - so if you have a serious inquiry, give me a try!
OIE - VETERINARY REQUIREMENTS
Office International des Epizooties.
OIE may be considered the international club of Senior Veterinary Officers who decide what diseases must be controlled and checked for, as well as the precise tests and vaccinations required for international trade in live animals.
